Dobey delivers second PDC Super Series title

Chris Dobey secured his second ever PDC title on day one of the final PDC Super Series events for 2021.

Hollywood never averaged below 97 throughout his entire day in Barnsley, eventually beating Ryan Searle 8-6 in a high class final.

It also helps Dobey’s chances of gaining a qualifying spot for the 2021 Grand Slam of Darts, joining a number of players who’ve won two titles on the floor this year.

Hollywood holds off Heavy Metal

After waiting six years to win his first ever PDC title in July, Dobey did not have to wait as long to win his next tournament.

Comfortable wins against Maik Kuivenhoven, Gavin Carlin and Darren Webster secured him a passage to the last 16. After beating Bradley Brooks, he hit averages of 105 and 111.7 in victories against Jose De Sousa and Rob Cross to reach the final in style.

Searle also hit big averages during his day, with his lowest being a 97.39 in a 6-4 win against Gary Blades in round one. Battling past Chas Barstow and Jamie Hughes to win his board, he then beat Dirk van Duijvenbode, Gabriel Clemens and Dave Chisnall to join Dobey in the final.

Hollywood got the early break in the final, before going 4-1 ahead after Searle missed darts to win the fifth. Heavy Metal fought back though, winning the break straight back with a 15 dart checkout on 78.

Both held, before an excellent 12 dart leg from Dobey got him a double break ahead once more to lead 6-3. However, Searle would not surrender easily. After hitting back to back 180s, he missed double 12 for what would have been the third nine darter of the day. In the end, he found double six for a 10 dart break, making the game 6-4.

The two held once more, but Hollywood missed a dart at the bull for the match in the 13th leg. Searle held, but it only delayed the outcome slightly. as a 15 dart hold from Dobey in the next leg gave the North East man the second PDC title of his career.

What else happened on day one of the PDC Super Series?

Michael van Gerwen once again looked in good touch for most of the day in Barnsley. However, a poor performance in the quarter finals against Dave Chisnall saw The Green Machine’s wait for a PDC ranking title go on to nearly a year.

Alan Soutar produced his best day on the tour since March. He defeated Peter Wright en route to a last eight defeat against Rob Cross.

Mike De Decker and Kevin Doets also produced good runs to the last 16, with both now in striking distance in the race to qualify for the World Darts Championship.

The battle to reach the Players Championship Finals in Minehead will also go down to the wire in the final two events. Keane Barry currently holds the final qualification spot, while two wins for Alan Tabern saw The Saint climb into 63rd out of 64 places.

Finally, while Searle did not hit a nine darter, both Gabriel Clemens and Scott Waites did. Clemens found his nine darter to win a last leg decider against Ross Smith in round two. Waites hit his in his first round loss to Daryl Gurney.
