Michael van Gerwen “I want to win, and nothing else counts for me.”

After losing in the UK Open semifinal to an inspired performance from Luke Humphries, Michael van Gerwen showed that fire is still burning. Talking to Dutch media, the three-times champion of the world told how winning is all that matters, and nothing else counts.

After losing the world number one place to Gerwyn Price, van Gerwen is looking to get back to his very best in 2021. We saw at the weekend van Gerwen play with his new Winmau darts, and overall the signs looked good for the Dutchman. It took a career-best performance from Humphries to knock out van Gerwen.

Speaking to RTL7, van Gerwen said

“He played one of the best matches of his career. Just about everything worked out for him, and you don’t really expect that because he hasn’t been doing so well the last few months. Lately, I often have players playing the match of their lives against me, on the other hand, I have to make sure I become even more dominant and confident”,
“I’m going to practice even harder in the coming weeks to become even better. From this tournament, I have no good feeling about it, I want to win, and nothing else counts for me.”

Next for van Gerwen is four days of action in the PDC Super Series, which takes place in Milton Keynes staring on the 16th of March. Thie Super Series should be the perfect preparation for van Gerwen with the Premier League’s start on the horizon.
Last year van Gerwen failed to make the Premier League finals for the first time, so this will be something he will be desperate to put right in 2021.
