Nico Kurz wins the German Super League

Nico Kurz wins the German Super League, booking his place back at Ally Pally for the World Darts Championship.

At the start of the afternoon, eight players were left in the German Super League, with Gabriel Clemens the favourite to win the title. Clemens would breezed through his quarter-final with an 8-1 over Manfred Bilderl.

Kurz was next up as he would play Kevin Munch. Munch most famous for beating Adron Lewis at the World Championship in 2017. On recent form, Kurz was the favourite, as the two players paths have been very different. Munch hasn’t hit the same heights after beating Lewis, while Kurz was one of the stories at this year’s world championships. Kurz would run out 8-5 winners over Munch, setting up the mouthwatering semi-final against Clemens.

Clemens headed into the semi-final with Kurz as the favourite to book a place in the final. The matched started well with both looking strong on their own throw. It was Kurz who found the all-important break of throw and never looked back. Clemens never looked like getting back into the game, as Kurz kept Clemens at arm’s length, winner 9-7 and booking a place in the final.

The final would be contested between Kurz and Dragutin Horvat. A cagey first session Kurz taking out 110 to lead 3-2 at the first break. From the break, Horvat looked the fresher and ran off a succession of legs to lead 8-5 and had one eye on the title. Nico Kurz rose to the challenge and found a way to get back into the match and keep his dream alive. Kurz found the break he needed sending the final into a final leg with the score level at 9-9.

Nico Kurz would leave double four for the title, with Horvat back on 141. Kurz was left to sweat as Horvat would have a dart at double 12 for the title from the big combination shot. Kurz took a deep breath as he steps forward to win the title. The young German landed double two, second dart as the emotion poured out.

Kurz will now head back to Ally Pally for the world championships in December. Kuz was one of the stories of the 2020 world championships, after beating Joe Cullen and James Wilson. Kurz would eventually lose against Luke Humphries, but most will agree the Kurz has a very bright future in the sport.
