The Ricoh Arena will host the 2020 World Grand Prix, the PDC have confirmed.
Yesterday, it was confirmed that the double start tournament will not take place at the Citywest Hotel in Dublin this year. Now, the PDC have found a replacement venue in the UK.
It will take place on Tuesday 6 October – Monday 12 October 2020.
The PDC were looking for a place where there’s a hotel on site so they can create a secure bubble. The Ricoh Arena fits that bill, beating out the University of Bolton Stadium to host the event. This will be the first PDC major held in Coventry.
The PDC have been using the Marshall Arena for events since the resumption of darts. The Summer Series, the World Matchplay and the Premier League have all been played in Milton Keynes.
However, the venue will be used to host Championship League Snooker between 28 September – 5 October 2020. This means that another venue will be required to host the Grand Prix, which is scheduled for 4-10 October 2020.
In a statement, PDC Chief Executive Matt Porter said: “The BoyleSports World Grand Prix is one of the highlights of the PDC calendar and whilst we’re disappointed we will not be at the Citywest Convention Centre in 2020, we can now look forward to an exciting and entertaining event at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry.”
“We saw an outstanding standard of play at the recent World Matchplay and are sure that will continue in the World Grand Prix, which remains a challenging and unique event due to the double-start format.
“The Citywest Convention Centre remains part of our plans for 2021 and beyond and we thank them for their support in exploring all options for the event to have taken place in Dublin this year.”
Ricoh Arena Commercial Venue Director Paul Michael added: “We are really excited and honoured to be able to host the 2020 BoyleSports World Grand Prix behind closed doors.
“This event will strengthen our relationship with the PDC, and demonstrate the diversity of the venue and its ambition to encourage more elite sports to Coventry.”
