Thornton seals back-to-back World Seniors World Championships titles
On Sunday night at the Circus Tavern, Robert Thornton successfully defended his JenningsBet World Seniors Darts Championship title.
The Thorn earned a cool £30,000 for winning, bringing his total earnings from the WSDT to over £70,000. He finished by defeating local qualifier Richie Howson 5-2 in the final.
Thornton only dropped two sets over the course of the weekend to Neil Duff and Howson in the final and adds a third major title also on the WSDT Tour with only the Masters alluding him last season which David Cameron won.
Thornton got off to the best possible start, taking the first three sets without opposition in a match of the highest calibre. Only one leg of the match required more than 18 darts, and both players averaged over 90 throughout the entire contest.
Howson earned his first chalk in set four, but after losing set five, he was facing a crushing defeat.
The Owl once more halted the charge in set 6, and he threatened to win set 7 by levelling the match at 2-2 by punishing the Scottish Ace for numerous missed match darts.
On his way to winning the World Seniors Darts Championship twice, however, the Ayrshire man was unstoppable.
