Wales win the PDC 2023 World Cup of Darts
The Welsh pair of Jonny Clayton and Gerwyn Price win the title for a second time defeating Scotland’s Peter Wright and Gary Anderson.
PDC 2023 World Cup has been the first year with the tournament being played out with doubles throughout.
Wales demolished Scotland 10-2 to lift the title for a second time, after picking up their first title back in 2020.
The Welsh had the throw in the Final and raced into a three-nil lead with Gerwyn Price flying out the blocks. Scotland did find a leg to close the deficit. Wales continued to charge and won the next two before the break with Price finishing 104 in leg six.
We saw very little change after the break with Wales’s power scoring being too much for Scotland and limiting Wright and Anderson to big out shots which they were unable to take.
Wales were able to take the big shots out with Gerwyn Price adding to his 104 with a 116 to take the lead to 8-1.
Anderson stopped the rot for Scotland with a 96 checkout but it was too little too late with Wales winning the next two legs and Jonny Clayton sealed the title with an 18 checkout after Price missed three.
Price and Clayton had to use all 15 legs in their Semi-Final to defeat Belgium. Scotland raced into a 6-3 lead against the impressive Belgium pair before Van den Bergh and Huybrechts punished missed doubles from the Welsh pair to take us to a decider.
After five darts without a treble in the decider, it looked like Belgium would be breaking the throw and booking their place in the Final before Wales fought back, and with Wales sitting on 100, Clayton took it out in two to the relief of Gerwyn Price.
Wales’s first win of the day came against Sweden in a battling 8-5 win
Scotland booked their place in the Final by defeating Germany to the despair of the crowd in Frankfurt.
Nothing to split the pair after six legs before Scotland got an important break. This was followed by five straight holds of throw in the game, the final one of them Wright took out a 109 checkout to move one leg away.
Gary Anderson had been the stronger player of the Scottish pair all weekend, but Peter Wright secured Scot’s place in the Final and secured a spot in the Grand Slam of Darts for the Scottish pair.
Also on Finals day, we saw Belgium book a place in the Semi-Final with a win over last year’s champions Australia in a 15-leg classic and Germany demolished England 8-3 to secure a place in the last four for a fifth time in World Cup history.
