James Wade dominated Japanese star Ryusei Azemoto with a 3-0 whitewash. The 42-year-old’s quest for his maiden title in his 22nd consecutive appearance got off to the perfect start.

But as one legend progressed, the biggest shock of the evening came in the second match, where debutant Stefan Bellmont demolished Raymond van Barneveld, also with a 3-0 whitewash.

Adding to the wave of debutant winners, American Adam Sevada claimed a 3-1 victory over Canada’s Matt Campbell, before Martin Schindler closed out the night with a first-round win over Stephen Burton, averaging just shy of a ton.

This all-North American affair between Campbell and Sevada kicked off the evening proceedings. Debutant Sevada took the opening leg to break the throw, but the opening set saw a topsy-turvy affair, with two further breaks of throw before Sevada converted double 16 to take the first set.

Campbell held his nerve to win a last-leg decider in set two to level the match at 1–1, but the Canadian then crucially missed two darts at double for a 2–1 set lead, allowing Sevada to regain the advantage.

Those crucial misses evidently crept into Campbell’s mind in the fourth set as CDC representative Sevada cruised to a comfortable 3–1 victory, meaning he will return to action on 22 December to face Charlie Manby in the evening session.

The second encounter saw five-time world champion Van Barneveld take on debutant Bellmont, with the Swiss star marking his first appearance on the Ally Pally stage. Bellmont looked settled from the off, completing the opening set in impressive fashion.

The 36-year-old continued his ruthless showing on the outer ring in the second set, putting the seasoned Dutchman under consistent pressure after narrow misses at crucial moments. A whitewash set followed to double his advantage heading into the interval.

Bellmont’s confidence grew further in the third set as he narrowly missed converting a remarkable 170 checkout, but his ruthless, clutch doubling offered Van Barneveld no way back. The 58-year-old looked visibly dejected as Bellmont wrapped up a whitewash victory, having lost nine of the 11 legs played despite averaging marginally higher.

In the third match of the evening, Wade cruised to a comfortable and expected victory over y, ending the evening’s streak of debutant wins. His performance wasn’t flashy, but a steady, composed display carried him through to the next round.

The man from Aldershot averaged 97.5 and over a ton in the first and third sets, respectively. While his second set wasn’t up to his usual standard, he still claimed nine out of ten legs to secure his first match win at Ally Pally in over three years.

Martin Schindler 3-1 Stephen Burton

The German No. 1 got off to a strong start, taking the first set 3-1 with a high checkout of 94 and a steady 97.65 average. However, Burton remained unfazed by his slow start, bouncing back to whitewash the second set and level the match at 1-1.

The advertisement break gave Schindler a chance to regroup, ultimately halting a brief three-leg surge from Burton. The ‘Wall’ followed with a whitewash of his own to regain the lead after Burton missed a key opportunity in the third leg, as his game continued to falter throughout the set.

Schindler leveraged his immense scoring power in the all-important final set to close out the match, averaging an impressive 107.36 and hitting three maximums, finishing 100% on the outer ring. His overall average of 99.14 was the highest of the night.
