Day 12 of the 2024/25 World Championships: Peter Wright back on track, as he crushes the reigning Champion

There is no question about who stole the headlines  on Day 12 of the World Championships: Callan Rydz, who whitewashed the defenceless Dimitri van den Bergh, and Peter Wright, who toppled Luke Humphries.

Luke Humphries’ unforeseen exit from the World Championships on Night 12 was the night’s biggest upset.

Missed doubles proving pivotal for the World Champion. In three of the four opening sets, the World Number One missed darts to take the set ahead of the two-time World Champion.

Peter Wright’s remarkable 70% checkout rate on his doubles (14/20) raised no doubts about his efficiency.

Snakebite crushed Cool Hand in the night’s last set, denying him a single opportunity at double and outscoring him convincingly with an incredible 115.62 average – 13.42 more than the Matchplay Champion.

The Riot was merciless, giving up only four legs during the entire match.

The 26-year-old averaged over 100 in the first three sets and slightly under 120 in the second.

Even though the set four performance was far from stellar, it was sufficient to defeat the UK Open Champion, who loses before the quarterfinals stage as opposed to the semifinals from last year.

 

Elsewhere on Day 12

Alexandra Palace was treated to a final set shootout once more. As Kevin Doets defeated Krzysztof Ratajski, the Polish Eagle, marginally.

The Polish Eagle had the lead early on, winning the first six legs (2 sets) but lost the next two sets.

Leg four of set five saw the Dutchman deliver a captivating 170 checkout, but it was insufficient to win the set. Put Ratajski one set away from a place in the semifinals for the first time his career.

The Pole wasted three match darts and let Doets in, who took full advantage of the situation and won the next two sets, claiming progression ahead of Krzysztof Ratajski.

The Swede, Jeffrey De Graaf easily defeated Paolo Nebrida by four sets to one in the opening match of Day 12 of the World Championships.

Nebrida was unable to generate too many opportunities on the outer ring, even after he won the opening set ahead De Graaf.

De Graaf’s continues his progression once more, and adds Nebrida to list of names he has chalked on route to the World Championships quarterfinals.

Rapid Ricky Evans and the high flying Robert Owen faced off in the first game of the evening session on Day 12.

Where Owen’s tour card would once again be saved courtesy of victory. Robert Owen would win by a two-set deficit for the third consecutive occasion, even though he only won three more total legs than Evans.

The all-Welsh match between Jonny Clayton and Gerwyn Price was the penultimate match on day 12 at the World Championships.

The 2021 World Champion would begin the better-of-two match, sweeping through the first two sets with averages above 100 (set one at 103.37 and set two at 111.06).

After converting all three of his double tries in set three, the Ferret would eventually reply with a set of his own. finishing set three in style with a 141.

After four sets, the 2021 Premier League Champion pulled even, but this would be his final sets of the 2024–25 World Championships.

In the end, the Iceman prevailed for the fourth time in a row over the previous Masters Champion by remaining composed in the final two sets.
