The qualification pathway for the 2026/27 Paddy Power World Darts Championship has now been officially unveiled, and it features a landmark development for the global game — with two guaranteed places allocated to African players for the very first time.

The expanded World Championship will once again feature a 128-player field competing for the prestigious Sid Waddell Trophy, with a record-breaking £5 million prize fund up for grabs. The sport’s showpiece event continues to grow in stature, and the latest qualification structure reflects the PDC’s commitment to broadening its international reach.

As in previous years, the leading players on the main ranking systems will secure automatic qualification. The top 40 players from the PDC Werner Rankings Ladder will book their places at Alexandra Palace. They will be joined by the top 40 highest-ranked players from the ProTour Order of Merit who have not already qualified via the main rankings.

That accounts for 80 competitors, with the remaining 48 places reserved for International Qualifiers. These positions are distributed across the PDC’s global affiliate circuits and secondary tours, ensuring representation from an increasingly diverse spread of territories.

A historic milestone within this structure is the guaranteed inclusion of two African representatives. This follows the breakthrough appearance of Kenyan star David Munyua at Alexandra Palace, which highlighted the continent’s growing presence on the world stage. For the first time, two dedicated qualification spots will be awarded through the African Darts Group structure.

One berth will be decided via a Northern African Qualifier, while the second will go to the winner of the Southern African Qualifier. This ensures broader continental representation and provides a direct route to the sport’s biggest stage for players across Africa.

Asia will once again be strongly represented in the expanded field. Five places are reserved for the highest-ranked players on the PDC Asian Tour Order of Merit. In addition, the two finalists from the Asian Championship will each secure qualification. The PDC China Champion will also claim a guaranteed place, while standalone qualifiers in both India and Japan will determine one representative apiece.

North America’s Championship Darts Corporation (CDC) circuit has been allocated five spots within the 128-player field, continuing its significant contribution to the tournament line-up. Meanwhile, three places will be awarded to players from the Nordic and Baltic region, reinforcing the PDC’s commitment to supporting growth in emerging European territories.

The women’s game will again have a strong presence at Alexandra Palace. Four female competitors are guaranteed entry into the 2026/27 tournament. The winner of the Women’s World Matchplay will automatically qualify, alongside the top three players on the Women’s Series Order of Merit. This structure ensures continued visibility and opportunity for leading female players on darts’ biggest platform.

Development pathways also remain a key feature of the qualification system. The top three players from the Development Tour Order of Merit and the top three from the Challenge Tour Rankings will each secure their spots in the capital. In addition, the reigning PDC World Youth Champion will book a place in the field.

Further opportunities will be available through the Tour Card Holder Qualifier, where a minimum of two players will progress into the main event. This provides an additional lifeline for professionals seeking to secure their place in the expanded championship.

All 128 competitors will enter the tournament at the first-round stage under the revised format. The 32 seeded players, based on the main Order of Merit, will be joined by players ranked 33-64. These 64 players will be randomly drawn into one half of the bracket to face the remaining 64 international and tour qualifiers in round one, creating an open and unpredictable pathway through the draw.

The 2026/27 Paddy Power World Darts Championship will get underway in December before reaching its conclusion in January, as the sport once again brings the curtain down on one year and ushers in the next in spectacular fashion.
