The mind games have begun with the World Championships around the corner. As World Champion Peter Wright says Michael van Gerwen has ‘no chance’ of regaining the world title this year.

World Champion Peter Wright believes world number one Michael van Gerwen has ‘no chance’ of regaining the world title this year.

Wright was speaking at the BoyleSports Grand of Darts after match media when he beat Dirk van Duijvenbode.

Wright was asked by Phill Barrs where he thought his games was will the World Championships on the horizon.

“I’m not far away (from) being really happy. Depends where the venue is, depends if it’s at Ally Pally or not.” Wright said.

Snakebite then went on to say “To be honest, Gezzy would be the only one to threaten me in the tournament.”

After saying that Wright was asked, with that answer are you already written off Van Gerwen for the world title? Wright replied “Yes, sure. He has no chance.”

After the Comments

After making the comments, Wright would go on to lose his final game at the Grand Slam of Darts to Devon Petersen. The defeat meant the world champion was eliminated at the group stages, with a below-par performance only averaging 85.

Has started the mind games this early backfired on Wright? With MvG seeming to be on the return to form over the last few weeks, could this have been a mistake by Peter Wright? One thing we know about the Dutchman he doesn’t need much motivation and Wright could have lite the flame in van Gerwen ahead of the World Championships.

Time will tell what the comments will have done to both players, but Wright has more thinking to do. In recent weeks we have seen Wright go back to chopping and changing his darts. With doing this, his form seems to have suffered because of it.

Who do you think is in the better place at the moment van Gerwen or Wright?
