Luke Littler eyeing records in Birmingham as the rest watch on – Night fifteen preview

Luke Littler will aim to make BetMGM Premier League history on Thursday night when the teenage sensation targets a fourth consecutive nightly victory at the Utilita Arena in Birmingham.

Night 15 of the Premier League campaign marks the penultimate evening of league-phase action, with the battle for Finals Night qualification intensifying as the roadshow heads to the West Midlands.

The headline clash of the quarter-finals sees league leader Littler take on nearest challenger Jonny Clayton in a blockbuster encounter between the top two players in the standings.

Littler arrives in Birmingham in scintillating form after securing nightly victories in Liverpool, Aberdeen and Leeds to open up a five-point advantage over Clayton at the summit of the table.

The reigning World Champion has now matched his own record of six nightly wins in a single Premier League campaign — a feat he first achieved during his remarkable debut season last year.

Victory over Clayton on Thursday would guarantee Littler top spot in the league table for a third successive year, while also moving him one step closer to becoming the first player ever to win seven nights in a single Premier League season.

“I’ve just got to keep going,” claimed Littler ahead of Thursday’s showdown.

“I’ve got a lot of confidence and now I can go chasing my own records within the next two weeks.

“After the win against Jonny last week, I knew I was a few points clear. I’ve just got to keep top spot now.

“I think it will be a very good game against Jonny. He will be wanting the win, I’ll be wanting the win, so expect fireworks!”

Clayton, the 2021 Premier League champion, has enjoyed an outstanding return to the competition this season and is already assured of finishing inside the top two.

However, the Welshman knows only victory over Littler will keep alive his hopes of overtaking the Warrington star and securing first place heading into Finals Night later this month.

While Littler and Clayton have already confirmed their spots at The O2 in London, the race for the remaining two Play-Off positions remains finely poised heading into Birmingham.

Gerwyn Price currently occupies third place in the standings, with reigning Premier League champion Luke Humphries sitting fourth following a strong run of recent form.

Price faces a huge quarter-final showdown against Michael van Gerwen in arguably the most important match of the night from a qualification perspective.

Van Gerwen slipped out of the top four after Humphries leapfrogged him in Leeds last week, leaving the Dutchman facing a crucial evening in his quest to extend his remarkable Finals Night streak.

The seven-time Premier League champion trails Price by three points ahead of Thursday’s action but arrives in Birmingham full of confidence after returning to winning ways on the ProTour earlier this week.

Van Gerwen captured Players Championship 15 in Leicester on Tuesday, producing several vintage displays throughout the day, including a stunning 122.34 average in his semi-final demolition of Martin Schindler.

“I believe in my own ability, and I think I’m playing some good darts,” declared Van Gerwen following that success.

“For me, it was important after a long time that I managed to win a ProTour. It meant a lot.

“I love what I do, and especially when I play like this, I love it even more.”

Humphries, meanwhile, has reignited his Premier League campaign with consecutive runner-up finishes in Aberdeen and Leeds.

The world number one suffered narrow 6-5 defeats to Littler in both finals, with last week’s showdown in Leeds particularly painful after Humphries missed a match dart to deny the teenager victory.

Despite those setbacks, Humphries now has qualification firmly back in his own hands as he attempts to reach Finals Night for the third consecutive season.

The former world champion opens his Birmingham campaign against Stephen Bunting in a repeat of last week’s semi-final clash at the First Direct Arena.

Bunting impressed despite defeat in Leeds, averaging close to 106 in a high-quality contest, and the Liverpudlian knows he must now produce two huge performances across the final league nights to maintain realistic Play-Off hopes.

The former Masters champion currently sits six points behind Humphries in seventh place but remains determined to finish the campaign strongly.

“I’m always raring to go when it comes to the Premier League,” claimed Bunting.

“I know what I need to do – I need to have two really good nights now, so let’s hope this is the start of something big.

“It’s been a long season already, but I feel fresh, I feel ready and I’m just looking forward to the night to be honest.”

The evening’s opening quarter-final will feature Josh Rock against Dutch youngster Gian van Veen, with Van Veen facing a potentially defining night in his bid to break into the top four.

The Dutchman trails Humphries by three points entering Night 15 and cannot afford another early exit if he is to remain firmly in contention heading into the final week.

Rock, meanwhile, has already been mathematically eliminated from Play-Off contention following his quarter-final defeat in Leeds last week.

However, the Northern Irishman heads into Birmingham full of confidence after capturing the Austrian Darts Open title on Sunday — his second European Tour triumph.

Rock also produced perfection against Van Veen earlier in the campaign, landing a sensational nine-dart finish during their Night Four meeting, although the Dutchman has won both of their other league encounters this season.

With only two league nights remaining before the Play-Offs at The O2 on May 28, every point now carries major significance in the race for Premier League glory.

Players earn five points for winning a nightly title, three points for finishing runner-up and two points for reaching the semi-finals, with the top four in the table advancing to Finals Night in London.
