2023 Betfred World Matchplay Day Six Review

The first two Quarter Finals took place in sunny Blackpool with Joe Cullen and Nathan Aspinall progressing

Cullen Rocks Gurney

Joe Cullen books his place in the World Matchplay Semi Final for the first time in his career with a 16-11 win over Daryl Gurney

Joe Cullen raced out the blocks and took all five legs in the opening session, after Gurney missed four darts to take leg five.

Superchin did get up in running with a break in the sixth with a break before they had one each to give us three straight before two holds to make it 7-3 at the interval.

Joe Cullen makes his first Matchplay Semi Final

We had two ton plus finishes in the match and they both came in the third session with Gurney finishing off a 132 on the bullseye to close the score to just three. Joe Cullen going ten times better with a 142 to the delight of the Blackpool crowd to lead 9-5

Joe Cullen continued to keep a buffer in the scoreline and after they went off at 12-8 for the final interval, you could see the frustrating Gurney had with his own performance.

Whatever Gurney said to himself during the break clearly worked with a hold followed by the break but the run didn’t last long with firing back with the same and they seemed to be too much for Gurney and he sealed the win just three legs later to secure a Semi Final place.

Dobey Wins The Battle Of Flatmates

Chris Dobey will face Joe Cullen in the World Matchplay Semi Final after defeating his Blackpool flatmate

There was very little to separate the pair early on, and with the crowd siding with Aspinall, when he took out a 128 to level up the scores at 2-2.

Hollywood won the next two legs, with the sixth being completed in style with a 140 checkout and he quickly followed it up with a 100 out to lead 6-3.

Nathan Aspinall wins a Quarter Final at Blackpool at his third attempt

The game was swinging back the way of Aspinall next when he won five of the next six to take the lead 8-7 at the third break.

Aspinall found another gear and he went full throttle in the next session winning four out of five including a 116 checkout to lead 12-8.

The Asp moved two away from victory, before Dobey found a run of four legs including a 14 and 11 dart legs to close to the gap to four before Aspinall punished miss darts by Dobey to close it to one leg.

Nathan Aspinall missed a match dart to win 16-10 but only had to wait a couple more legs to finally seal the victory and evict his current flat mate.
