2025 European Championship Preview: Humphries, Littler, and Aspinall Headline Dortmund Showdown
The 2025 Machineseeker European Championship begins this Thursday, bringing together the top 32 players from this year’s European Tour rankings. The prestigious tournament will unfold at Dortmund’s iconic Westfalenhalle from October 23 to 26, with £120,000 awaiting the winner and plenty of pride on the line.
World number one Luke Humphries and reigning World Champion Luke Littler headline a glittering field that also features five former champions. Among them is Dutch superstar Michael van Gerwen, who will chase a record fifth title, while Nathan Aspinall enters the event as the top seed after securing three European Tour victories during an exceptional 2025 season.
The opening round will be played across evening sessions on Thursday and Friday, and fans won’t have to wait long for fireworks. On Friday night, top seed Aspinall will open his campaign in a mouth-watering tie against two-time European Champion Rob Cross — a matchup already being billed as one of the highlights of the first round.
Reflecting on his recent form, Aspinall admitted that his confidence has returned after a challenging summer. “It’s been a difficult few months since the World Matchplay,” he said following his triumph at the German Darts Championship in Hildesheim last weekend. “My performances since Blackpool had not been great, but I’ve been working hard at home. I’ve gone back to doing what I know works; putting in plenty of practice and working on my fitness. It was an amazing weekend of darts in Hildesheim, and to be the number one seed going into the European Championship has given me another huge confidence boost.”
Germany’s top player, Martin Schindler, finished second in the European Tour rankings and will have home support behind him when he faces Dave Chisnall on Thursday night. Chisnall secured his spot in the field with a last-gasp qualification result and will look to make the most of his opportunity against one of the season’s most consistent players.
Another marquee clash on the opening night sees Stephen Bunting take on world number eight Chris Dobey. The former Masters champion has been in fine form in 2025, capturing his first European Tour titles in Riesa and Basel, and now hopes to turn that form into a major television victory. “I know I haven’t won a TV ranking major in the PDC, but I don’t think it’s far away,” said Bunting. “I think I’m playing some fantastic darts, but sometimes to win these titles you need a little bit of luck at key moments. I’m really looking forward to it. I’m going in as the number three seed and I can’t wait to play in front of the German crowd. Dortmund is always a great place to play, and hopefully I can produce my best form and go on to win it.”
Thursday night’s session also features some classic matchups. Van Gerwen begins his quest for a fifth European crown against fellow Dutchman Wessel Nijman, while Gerwyn Price faces Daryl Gurney in a renewal of a long-standing rivalry. Former champions Peter Wright and Ross Smith will collide in another intriguing encounter, as Welsh star Jonny Clayton meets Ryan Searle in what promises to be a fast-paced affair.
The night’s lineup also includes a clash between World Youth Champion Gian van Veen and Australian number one Damon Heta, while Ryan Joyce takes on 2024 semi-finalist Luke Woodhouse in the tournament opener.
Friday’s second session will close out round one, with world number one Humphries beginning his title challenge against Poland’s top player, Krzysztof Ratajski. Humphries will be looking to defend not only his European crown but also his position at the top of the world rankings. His closest challenger, Luke Littler, could leapfrog him if he captures the Dortmund title. The teenage sensation faces a challenging opener against five-time World Champion Raymond van Barneveld. Should Littler lift the trophy, he will become the new world number one.
Elsewhere on Friday, 2018 European Champion James Wade takes on Belgian ace Mike De Decker, while Scottish legends Gary Anderson and Cameron Menzies meet in an all-Scottish clash. Northern Ireland’s Josh Rock — fresh from his World Cup success — faces German number two Ricardo Pietreczko, and another home favourite, Niko Springer, will play 2024 runner-up Jermaine Wattimena. Dutch pair Dirk van Duijvenbode and Danny Noppert will also battle for a place in round two, with the winner likely to meet either Aspinall or Cross on Saturday.
The second round will be contested in a double session on Saturday, followed by Sunday’s decisive stages — quarter-finals in the afternoon, with the semi-finals and the final scheduled for Sunday evening. With so many in-form players and fierce rivalries across the draw, the 2025 European Championship promises to deliver another thrilling chapter in darts’ modern era.
