From 2026 onwards, the champion of the Australian Darts Masters will lift a brand-new prize — the Kyle Anderson Trophy — named in tribute to one of Australia’s most beloved darts players and a pioneer for the sport in the country. The Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) announced that the annual World Series of Darts event will carry the late star’s name, ensuring his legacy remains firmly embedded in the game.

Kyle Anderson’s career was closely tied to the World Series stage. He made his breakthrough appearance at the inaugural Sydney Darts Masters in 2013, showcasing his talent to a global audience. Four years later, he created history by becoming the first Australian to win a World Series event, claiming victory at the 2017 Auckland Darts Masters. That same year proved to be a career-defining one, as he also lifted a Players Championship title and reached the European Championship semi-finals, famously throwing a nine-darter along the way.

After earning his PDC Tour Card in 2014, Anderson made the significant move to base himself in the UK, competing against the world’s best week in and week out. His dedication and flair for the game made him a fan favourite. However, in early 2020, as the Covid-19 pandemic began, he returned home to Australia to be with his family.

Sadly, Anderson’s journey was cut tragically short when he passed away in August 2021 at the age of just 33, following ongoing health issues. His loss was deeply felt throughout the darts community, both in Australia and across the globe.

The introduction of the Kyle Anderson Trophy ensures that his contribution to the sport will be remembered for years to come. PDC Chief Executive Matt Porter described Anderson as a “trailblazer” for darts in Australia, noting that he represented exactly what the World Series of Darts aimed to achieve.

“We’re pleased that we can recognise Kyle with the introduction of the Kyle Anderson Trophy at the Australian Darts Masters,” Porter said. “Kyle was a trailblazer for what we want the World Series to be — a platform for domestic players to compete on the big stage and eventually progress to become PDC professionals. “His former schoolmate Damon Heta has since followed that same path, and it’s fitting that future winners of the Australian Darts Masters will get to lift the Kyle Anderson Trophy. We’ll work with Kyle’s family to create an appropriate design and look forward to unveiling the trophy next year.”

Porter’s mention of Damon Heta underlines Anderson’s influence on the next generation. Heta, now one of Australia’s top players, has followed in Anderson’s footsteps by making a mark on the global stage.

The decision to name the trophy after Anderson has also been warmly welcomed by his family. His wife, Tara Anderson, expressed heartfelt gratitude for the gesture.

“On behalf of the family, we are so grateful to the PDC for wanting to honour Kyle in such a way,” she said. “We can’t wait to see the trophy come to life next year.”

The announcement is not only a fitting tribute to a player whose passion and skill brought joy to countless fans, but it also strengthens the link between the Australian Darts Masters and the country’s rich sporting heritage.
