Betfred World Matchplay Day Three – MvG Too Strong For Littler

Round one of the Betfred World Matchplay is completed and Luke Littler was sent packing by Michael van Gerwen. Also Michael Smith got the better of Gary Anderson in a great night of arrows

MvG Too Strong For Littler

The game of the first round was won by Michael van Gerwen who defeated wonderkid Luke Littler 10-5 in a fantastic tie.

It was a nervy start from both players and after a miss by Luke Littler at the bullseye for a 167 checkout, it was Michael van Gerwen who lead at the break.

Michael van Gerwen looked to take momentum from that early lead and extended it to 5-2 and making it four legs on the spin, however The Nuke did break that run with a fantastic 11 dart leg followed by two missed darts at a double in the next which allowed MvG to hold onto a lead.

Michael continued to push on, and the highest finish of the game was by the Dutchman with a 146 checkout to make it 8-5 and that seemed to be a really body blow for Littler who was on a double.

Michael van Gerwen only allowed Littler one more leg and he completed the emotional win with a 101.93 average in a fantastic first round game, he will face Joe Cullen next.

Smith Bullies Anderson

Michael Smith defeated Gary Anderson in a one sided affair winning 10-5

Gary Anderson took the opening three legs, however the most important leg seemed to come in leg four, when Gary Anderson missed four attempts at a double and Bully Boy won his first leg of the game.

That leg was the first of seven for Michael Smith to win on the spin, so close to being eight with a fantastic attempt at a 170, just missing by the width of the wire.

Michael Smith was so close to winning it in style however, he missed a match dart for a 110 to win 10-4, however he only needed to wait one more leg to get a win over his old mentor.

Sensational Searle

The opening game on a fabulous night was won in fantastic style by Ryan Searle who defeated Damon Heta 10-4

Damon Heta started the stronger winning the opening two, but it was a 167 from Searle followed by a 142 which was the start of six leg winning run from Heavy Metal.

Damon Heta finally stopped the rot but it was another ton plus checkout, this time a 130 from Ryan Searle to move just three legs away.

The Heat could only find one more leg, but it was the equal best of the game with an 11 darter, before it was another clutch from Searle and he booked his place in the last 16.

Dobey defeats Edhouse

Chris Dobey was the final name added to the second round list at the Betfred World Matchplay after getting the better of Ritchie Edhouse.

Dobey got hold of the game early on with a break and lead 3-2 at the interval. Unfortunately for Dobey it didn’t last with Edhouse breaking back and made it two ton plus checkouts in the opening stages with a 130 and 116.

Dobey single double hitting was his downfall early on however, going into the break he found a 94 finish with double double on the 19’s. That wasn’t the only time he used that route but this time it was for 96 finish.

Dobey took the lead at 8-7 and then really hurt Edhouse, and the last two legs he won with ease to set up a game with Michael Smith.
