Classy Jonny Clayton moves to the top after night win in Glasgow

Jonny Clayton produced three outstanding performances to climb to the top of the BetMGM Premier League table with a commanding Night Three triumph in Glasgow.

The 2021 Premier League champion was in inspired form at the OVO Hydro, defeating Gerwyn Price, Luke Littler and Gian van Veen to secure the £10,000 nightly bonus and seize early control of the standings.

Clayton’s campaign began with a significant breakthrough against close friend and World Cup team-mate Price. Heading into the contest, the Welshman had suffered ten straight defeats against his compatriot, but he halted that run in emphatic fashion. Clinical on the outer ring, Clayton converted six of his ten attempts at double to claim a morale-boosting victory — his first over Price since March 2023.

That result appeared to ignite his challenge. In the semi-finals, Clayton dismantled world number one Littler with a ruthless 6-1 win, averaging 101 to hand the reigning champion his joint-heaviest loss in Premier League history. The Ferret controlled the match from the outset, combining steady scoring with punishing finishing to leave Littler chasing shadows.

Awaiting Clayton in the final was Van Veen, the World Championship runner-up, who had edged their previous meeting in the Night One semi-finals. That earlier defeat added extra motivation, and Clayton responded with arguably his best display of the evening. Averaging 104.35, he stormed to a 6-2 victory to cap a memorable night on Scottish soil.

The final began at a blistering pace. Clayton raced into a two-leg lead in just 28 darts, immediately applying pressure. Van Veen briefly threatened a comeback, reducing the deficit to 3-2, but Clayton found another gear. He powered clear in the closing stages, sealing the title with a spectacular 156 checkout that brought the Glasgow crowd to its feet.

“When your finishing goes well the confidence is up, and tonight was my night,” reflected Clayton, who also enjoyed nightly success in Glasgow back in 2022.

“I’m enjoying myself, and when you enjoy what you’re doing, things seem to happen for you.

“I’ve got a bit of experience in the Premier League. This is my favourite tournament, and I know what you’ve got to do to get to Finals Night.

“Hopefully this is going to be a push in the right direction. I’m doing alright so far!”

The victory propelled Clayton to the summit of the table, overtaking seven-time champion Michael van Gerwen, who withdrew from Night Three earlier in the day due to illness. With the Premier League’s league phase often decided by fine margins, Clayton’s early consistency could prove pivotal in the race for a top-four finish.

Van Veen, meanwhile, continues to impress in his debut Premier League campaign. The Dutchman advanced to his second nightly final in three weeks thanks to polished victories over Stephen Bunting and Luke Humphries.

He began the evening with a convincing 6-3 win against Bunting, averaging 104.36 to condemn the former Masters champion to a third consecutive quarter-final exit. In the semi-finals, Van Veen demonstrated both resilience and nerve. Trailing 3-1 against Humphries, he battled back to win a deciding leg, surviving two match darts despite his opponent firing in seven 180s and averaging 103 in a high-quality encounter.

Humphries had earlier produced one of the standout displays of the night in his quarter-final against Josh Rock. The world number two averaged just under 106 to extend Rock’s winless start to the campaign, underlining the competitive depth of this year’s field.

Attention now turns to Belfast, where the Premier League roadshow heads next week. Rock will look to ignite his season on home soil when he faces Van Veen in a meeting between two of the competition’s newer faces. Van Gerwen is set to return to action against Price, while Littler will have the opportunity to avenge his Glasgow defeat when he meets Clayton in the night’s opener. Bunting and Humphries complete the quarter-final line-up, both chasing their first nightly win of the 2026 season.

With three weeks played, momentum is beginning to build — and Clayton, brimming with confidence and rediscovered finishing power, has laid down an early marker in the race to Finals Night.
