Gerwyn Price will be targeting top spot in the BetMGM Premier League standings when the action heads to the Brighton Centre on Thursday night.
Price arrives on the south coast in red-hot form after a sensational Night Nine triumph in Manchester, where he produced a trio of outstanding performances. The Welshman posted averages of 104.5, 112.9 and 105.8 in victories over Michael van Gerwen, Stephen Bunting and Gian van Veen to secure the nightly win in emphatic fashion.
That run has propelled Price into second place in the table, just behind the leader and narrowly ahead of his World Cup teammate Jonny Clayton on leg difference. With the standings tightening, Thursday presents an opportunity for the 41-year-old to climb to the summit for the first time this season.
Price returns to Brighton looking to improve on his recent record at the venue, having exited at the first hurdle in each of the last two visits. However, he does have fond memories of the arena, having claimed victory there in 2023 before going on to finish runner-up in that year’s competition.
“It’s nice to be second,” said Price, who opens his campaign against Josh Rock.
“I just want to pick up two points every week.
“We probably all look at the table. It’s in every player’s head.
“I think everyone’s still in with a chance, even Josh if he wins a couple. He’s got a bit of confidence now.”
Rock heads into the contest with renewed belief after a difficult start to his Premier League season. The 24-year-old lost his opening seven matches but has since turned a corner, winning back-to-back quarter-final ties—both against Clayton.
His breakthrough victory came in Berlin, where the World Cup champion finally got off the mark, and he followed that up with another impressive performance in Manchester. There, he overcame a 107.44 average from Clayton to double his points tally and keep his campaign alive.
Despite sitting nine points outside the Play-Off places, Rock remains optimistic about his chances if he can build momentum over the remaining weeks.
“I’ve got all my confidence back after winning in Berlin,” he said.
“After getting my first win, now I have all the confidence in the world and I can push on.
“It’s a monkey off my back. I have no pressure on me now and I can enjoy the rest of my Premier League campaign.”
Elsewhere on the night, Clayton will look to halt a dip in form when he faces reigning champion Luke Humphries in the opening match. Clayton made a strong start to the season, winning his first match for six consecutive weeks, but has since seen a seven-point lead evaporate, dropping him to third in the standings.
Humphries, currently sixth, has endured an inconsistent first half of the campaign. However, he returns to a venue where he enjoyed a memorable moment last year, producing a nine-dart finish against Rob Cross.
League leader Luke Littler will also be in action, taking on Bunting in a repeat of their high-quality clash in Berlin, where both players averaged over 105. Littler enjoyed success at this venue last year, winning the night with victories over Price, Van Gerwen and Nathan Aspinall, hitting 12 maximums across the evening.
The final quarter-final sees an all-Dutch encounter between Van Veen and Van Gerwen, a match that could prove pivotal in the race for the top four. Van Veen currently sits in fifth place, just one point behind his compatriot, despite reaching four finals so far this season. However, he is still searching for his first nightly win.
