Kaya Baysal overcomes Mitchell Lawrie to claim Winmau Junior World Masters crown

Burnley’s Kaya Baysal claimed JDC Winmau Junior World Masters glory with a straight-sets victory over Mitchell Lawrie at Arena MK in Milton Keynes on Sunday.

The pair renewed their growing rivalry in a repeat of last month’s JDC Junior World Championship final, with Baysal producing a composed and clinical display to avenge his defeat to the Scottish youngster at Alexandra Palace.

There was little to separate the two in the opening exchanges. Baysal struck first on tops, before Lawrie responded immediately with a two-dart 89 checkout to level proceedings.

Despite missing tops for a spectacular 120 finish, the young Englishman still edged the opening set, after Lawrie missed a dart at double nine when attempting an 83 combination.

Baysal then tightened his grip on the contest in set two, landing a superb 121 checkout on the bull to break throw and seize the initiative. He capitalised ruthlessly moments later, punishing a hat-trick of missed doubles from Lawrie to close out the match on tops and seal a deserved title success.

“It feels amazing to win this competition for the first time,” reflected Baysal, who averaged 89.37 in victory.

“To win a title on the big stage means a lot to me.

“I’m sure me and Mitchell will have a rivalry for years to come. We’re playing each other more and more every week, and hopefully we can keep pushing each other to improve.

“When I turn 16, I’ll probably go to Q School next year, but for now I just want to keep doing what I’m doing.”

Both players came through a gruelling Junior World Masters field in Aylesbury on Saturday, battling past 256 competitors to book their places in Sunday’s showpiece final.

Baysal enjoyed a remarkable run through the early rounds, not dropping a single set on Saturday. He averaged over 97 in his quarter-final win against CJ Ayres, before producing a stunning 100.2 average to dispatch Jack Nankervis in the semi-finals.

Lawrie also impressed on his route to the final, eliminating JDC National Volts champion Jack Johnson in the quarter-finals, before battling through a comeback victory over Harley Glycos in the last four.
