Luke Humphries Makes History With Dramatic US Darts Masters Title Defence In New York

Luke Humphries etched his name into the history books on Friday night, successfully defending the bet365 US Darts Masters title with a dramatic last-leg victory over Luke Littler in front of a record crowd at Madison Square Garden.

The world number two became the first player to retain the title in New York, producing a sensational deciding-leg performance to deny Littler and claim his third World Series of Darts crown.

The latest chapter in the growing rivalry between the world’s top two players unfolded before a sold-out audience of 5,000 fans inside the Infosys Theater, setting a new attendance record for a darts event in the United States.

Having partnered England to World Cup of Darts glory earlier this month, Humphries and Littler once again went head-to-head on one of the sport’s biggest stages, delivering another contest worthy of their billing.

Littler was chasing a maiden US Darts Masters title, but Humphries made a blistering start to the final, racing into a commanding 4-1 lead with a string of clinical finishes and heavy scoring.

However, the world number one responded in typical fashion.

The teenage sensation reeled off four consecutive legs to turn the contest on its head and move within touching distance of victory, only for Humphries to dig deep and produce another remarkable comeback.

“This is the most iconic venue I think darts will ever go to,” reflected Humphries, who averaged 104 to prevail in a thrilling finale.

“Every year we come here it gets better and better, and the fans have been absolutely amazing. It’s been insane.

“It’s great to go back-to-back. I’m always out to set records and do things that not many players have done.

“Me and Luke always have fantastic games, and it’s just another brilliant game in the saga of Luke v Luke.

“I feel if I can keep performing like this then I can keep pushing him, because he’s unbelievable. He’s the toughest player in the world to beat.”

Humphries was averaging over 107 during the early exchanges and looked poised to take complete control of the contest.

Yet after missing two darts that would have given him a 5-1 advantage, the momentum swung dramatically in Littler’s favour.

The reigning World Champion, who struck nine maximums throughout the final, found another gear midway through the contest and stormed into a 5-4 lead.

Nevertheless, Humphries responded with the composure expected of a reigning champion, pinning a crucial 72 finish to restore parity at 5-5 and set up a dramatic conclusion.

Both players then held throw convincingly to force a deciding leg, where Humphries produced his best darts when it mattered most.

An outstanding 11-darter completed a memorable triumph and ensured the title would remain in his possession for another year.

The 31-year-old had been in excellent form throughout Finals Day.

He opened his evening with a commanding 6-3 victory over Stephen Bunting, averaging close to 106 to secure his place in the semi-finals.

Humphries then produced one of the comebacks of the tournament against Dutch star Gian van Veen.

Trailing 6-3 and facing two match darts, the Englishman reeled off four consecutive legs to snatch victory and book his place in another major final.

Littler’s route to the showpiece was equally impressive.

Following his opening-round victory over Canadian veteran David Cameron, the world number one faced another Canadian challenge in the quarter-finals against Jim Long.

The teenager produced a ruthless display, averaging over 102 in a comprehensive 6-1 success to move into the last four.

There, he overcame James Wade in a high-quality semi-final despite the veteran Englishman averaging over a ton and converting all four of his attempts at double.

Reflecting on his first appearance in a US Darts Masters final, Littler was full of praise for the atmosphere created by the New York crowd.

“It was an unbelievable experience tonight,” admitted the 19-year-old, who was featuring in his maiden US Darts Masters final.

“There were a lot of England fans here who are going to the game [tomorrow] so I appreciate them coming along.

“As the night went on they got louder and louder, and I wish I was in the crowd with them to be fair!”

Earlier in the evening, James Wade had produced an impressive performance to reach the semi-finals.

The ten-time television title winner defeated Gerwyn Price 6-3 in a contest of exceptional quality, overcoming a 103.93 average from last year’s runner-up to progress.

Price had looked in strong form throughout the tournament, but Wade’s finishing and experience proved decisive on the night.

The other quarter-final saw Gian van Veen continue his excellent recent run on the big stage.

The Dutch number one averaged over 106 as he dispatched Jonny Clayton 6-3, producing two ton-plus checkouts during another commanding display.

Although Van Veen ultimately fell short against Humphries in the semi-finals, the tournament once again highlighted his growing credentials among the sport’s elite.

Following a historic and record-breaking weekend in New York, attention now turns to the next leg of the World Series calendar.

The global tour resumes in August with back-to-back events in New Zealand and Australia, as the world’s leading players travel to Auckland and Wollongong ahead of September’s World Series of Darts Finals.
