Luke Littler to launch World Matchplay title defence as opening round schedule is confirmed

The opening schedule for the 2026 Betfred World Matchplay has been confirmed, with reigning champion Luke Littler set to headline the first night of action at the iconic Winter Gardens in Blackpool.

The prestigious tournament returns from July 18-26, with the world’s leading players battling for the famous Phil Taylor Trophy and the £225,000 winner’s cheque across nine days of world-class darts.

A star-studded 32-player field will compete in one of the sport’s biggest televised events, with the opening round taking place across four sessions between Saturday and Monday before the tournament moves into the knockout stages later in the week.

Saturday’s opening session gets underway at 1900 BST, and all eyes will be on defending champion Littler as he begins his bid to become only the fourth player in history to successfully retain the World Matchplay title.

The world number one will face German debutant Niko Springer in the penultimate match of the evening, with Springer making his first appearance on the famous Winter Gardens stage after an impressive breakthrough campaign.

Littler arrives in Blackpool looking to build on another remarkable season, and victory would see him join an elite group of players to defend the coveted title.

The opening night also features several mouth-watering contests.

Premier League star Josh Rock begins his campaign against Luke Woodhouse, while Stephen Bunting takes on fellow left-hander Niels Zonneveld in another intriguing encounter.

The evening’s other tie sees 2023 World Matchplay champion Nathan Aspinall renew acquaintances with Joe Cullen in a repeat of the semi-final they contested three years ago, as Aspinall begins his quest to lift the trophy for a second time.

Sunday’s afternoon session sees one of the tournament’s most successful players return to the Winter Gardens stage.

Three-time champion Michael van Gerwen opens his challenge against two-time quarter-finalist Andrew Gilding, with the Dutchman hoping to add another World Matchplay crown to his glittering collection.

Former champion Gary Anderson is also back in Blackpool and will begin his campaign against Ryan Joyce.

The 2018 winner remains one of the most dangerous players in the field and will be aiming to make another deep run in the tournament.

Elsewhere during the afternoon, 2023 runner-up Jonny Clayton faces Australian number one Damon Heta in what promises to be one of the most evenly matched ties of the opening round.

Chris Dobey and Dirk van Duijvenbode complete Sunday’s daytime schedule in another clash between two proven big-stage performers.

Attention then switches to Sunday’s evening session, where world number three Gian van Veen begins his pursuit of a maiden World Matchplay title.

The Dutch star has been handed a challenging opening test against newly crowned European Darts Open champion Krzysztof Ratajski, who arrives in Blackpool full of confidence following his recent success on the European Tour.

Former champion James Wade, who reached last year’s final, also begins his campaign on Sunday evening when he takes on Jermaine Wattimena.

Wade lifted the title back in 2007 and will once again be hoping his vast experience at the Winter Gardens proves decisive.

One of the standout ties of the session pits Wessel Nijman against five-time World Matchplay quarter-finalist Dave Chisnall.

Nijman has enjoyed a sensational 2026 campaign, collecting eight PDC ranking titles already this season, and will be eager to transfer that outstanding ProTour form onto one of the sport’s biggest stages.

The evening concludes with World Championship semi-finalist Ryan Searle facing Irish debutant William O’Connor, who makes his first appearance at the Winter Gardens after an impressive year on the ProTour.

The opening round concludes on Monday evening with another high-quality line-up.

Former champion Luke Humphries starts his bid to regain the title he won in 2024 when he takes on Scottish number two Cameron Menzies.

Humphries heads into the tournament among the favourites after another excellent season and will be determined to return to the latter stages in Blackpool.

Elsewhere, Gerwyn Price, runner-up in 2022, faces German number one Martin Schindler in what promises to be a fiercely competitive encounter.

Former World Matchplay champion Rob Cross has been paired with Dutch star Danny Noppert, while Ross Smith meets Winter Gardens debutant Kevin Doets in the final first-round contest.

Following the completion of the opening round, the tournament moves into the last-16 stage, with second-round matches scheduled across Tuesday and Wednesday evenings.

The quarter-finals will then be played on Thursday and Friday before attention turns to Finals Weekend.

The semi-finals are scheduled for Saturday, July 25, with the tournament reaching its climax on Sunday, July 26, when the Betfred Women’s World Matchplay takes place during the afternoon before the men’s final crowns the 2026 World Matchplay champion later that evening.
