Michael Van Gerwen struggles on a drama-filled day two at the International Darts Open

Defending champion Stephen Bunting made an emphatic start to his title defence at the Elten Safety Shoes International Darts Open on Saturday, producing a high-quality display in Riesa as Gian van Veen and Michael van Gerwen also progressed to Finals Day.

Fresh from ending his BetMGM Premier League campaign on a high with victory in Sheffield on Thursday evening, Bunting carried that momentum seamlessly onto the European Tour stage, dispatching Poland’s number one Krzysztof Ratajski 6-2 with a commanding performance at the WT Energiesysteme Arena.

The Liverpudlian averaged 102.54, crashed in five maximums and rarely allowed Ratajski a foothold in the contest, underlining his credentials as he bids to successfully defend the title he claimed 12 months ago.

“I feel great, I feel fresh and I feel ready to win,” declared Bunting after another impressive display.

“I won in the Premier League in Berlin last year, and then came straight here and won this, so hopefully there’s a lot of similarities!”

Saturday marked the entrance of the tournament’s seeded stars, with several big names beginning their campaigns in dramatic fashion.

Top seed Gian van Veen ended a frustrating run of three consecutive European Tour defeats by overcoming Connor Scutt 6-3. The reigning European Champion averaged just under 97 in a composed display to book a mouth-watering all-Dutch showdown against the in-form Kevin Doets.

Van Veen admitted the victory was a welcome boost after a difficult spell on the European Tour.

“I think everyone who’s watched me over the last few weeks knows it’s been tough,” conceded the Dutchman.

“I haven’t won a game on the European Tour since Goettingen, so I needed this win today.

“Kevin is one of the best Dutch players at the moment, but if I turn up tomorrow I’ve got a really good shot and hopefully it’s going to be a great game.”

Doets continued his outstanding recent form by edging past newly-crowned Players Championship champion Luke Woodhouse in a deciding-leg thriller.

The Dutchman survived a spirited comeback from Woodhouse to secure victory and extend his recent dominance over the Englishman, recording a third win against him in just 19 days.

Michael van Gerwen was another player forced to dig deep to keep his title hopes alive.

The three-time World Champion looked destined for an early exit when he fell 3-0 behind against Latvia’s Madars Razma, but the Dutch superstar showed his trademark resilience to battle back and claim a dramatic 6-5 victory.

Razma missed six darts to complete a famous upset, allowing Van Gerwen to capitalise. Clinical finishes of 164 and 127 proved pivotal as the Dutchman completed the turnaround to set up a last-16 clash with Australian number one Damon Heta.

Heta produced one of the most professional displays of the day, easing past Niels Zonneveld 6-2 to advance comfortably.

Wessel Nijman also showcased his fighting qualities in a thrilling comeback victory over William O’Connor.

The Dutchman appeared on the brink of elimination when he trailed 5-3, but responded brilliantly with finishes of 107, 134 and 106 to reel off the final three legs and secure his place in the last 16.

His reward is a meeting with third seed James Wade, who delivered one of the most dominant performances of the day.

Wade whitewashed Dave Chisnall 6-0 in ruthless fashion, never allowing the eight-time European Tour winner to settle as he booked his place on Finals Day.

Another remarkable comeback came courtesy of Cameron Menzies.

The Scotsman looked down and out against Austrian Darts Open champion Josh Rock after falling 4-0 behind, but produced an astonishing recovery to win six consecutive legs and eliminate the Northern Irishman.

Menzies now faces 2024 International Darts Open champion Martin Schindler after the German delighted the home crowd with a dramatic last-leg victory over Czech star Karel Sedlacek.

Former World Champion Rob Cross also produced a powerful turnaround against Belgian number one Mike De Decker.

Trailing 2-0 early in the contest, Cross responded by reeling off six unanswered legs, averaging 99 and converting 66 percent of his attempts at double to storm into the last 16.

That victory sets up one of the standout ties of Sunday’s afternoon session, with Cross taking on defending champion Bunting for a place in the quarter-finals.

German favourite Ricardo Pietreczko also thrilled the home support by defeating Danny Noppert in a gripping encounter.

Pietreczko appeared to be cruising after opening up a 5-2 lead, only for Noppert to force a deciding leg. The German held his nerve in the finale to secure a memorable victory and book a clash with Ross Smith.

Smith produced a strong display of his own, averaging over 102 in a convincing 6-3 success against former International Darts Open champion Joe Cullen.

Elsewhere, Ryan Searle advanced with a professional victory over European Tour debutant Charlie Manby. The World Championship semi-finalist pulled away in the closing stages after being tested by the impressive youngster.

Kim Huybrechts continued his excellent season by defeating Chris Dobey in a deciding-leg thriller, repeating his feat from the Austrian Darts Open by edging out the former Masters champion in dramatic fashion.

Searle and Huybrechts will now meet for a place in the quarter-finals.

Ryan Joyce also progressed after comfortably overcoming late replacement Christian Kist, earning a showdown with Jermaine Wattimena.

Wattimena finally ended his winless run in Riesa by defeating Bradley Brooks in another deciding-leg encounter to complete the last-16 line-up.

Finals Day at the WT Energiesysteme Arena gets underway on Sunday afternoon, with the remaining 16 players battling for quarter-final places before the tournament reaches its climax in the evening session, featuring the quarter-finals, semi-finals and final.
