Next Stop Rotterdam for Night Eleven as Gian Van Veen will fulfil his dreams

Gian van Veen is set to realise a lifelong ambition when the BetMGM Premier League heads to Rotterdam on Thursday night.

The Dutch star will be one of the main attractions at Rotterdam Ahoy on Night Eleven, as the battle for a place in the Play-Offs continues to intensify. Competing on home soil for the first time in the Premier League, Van Veen has the opportunity to take a major step towards the top four.

He faces reigning champion Luke Humphries in a crucial quarter-final clash, with both players looking to close the gap on the Play-Off positions. Van Veen currently sits fifth in the standings, four points outside the qualification places, while Humphries is just behind him in seventh, a point further back.

Despite not yet claiming a nightly win this season, Van Veen has been one of the most consistent performers, reaching four finals across the opening ten nights. Now, he hopes the backing of a home crowd can help him go one step further.

“I’m very excited. It’s the night I was looking most forward to and it’s finally going to happen,” said the 23-year-old.

“I still remember the first time it was held here in Rotterdam in 2016 – I was there in the crowd.

“I would have never thought that ten years later, I would be on that stage, but here we are!

“As soon as I got the invite, the 16th of April was marked with a red circle in the calendar.

“This is something I won’t ever forget in my life so I’m mostly going to enjoy it – but of course, it’s another game and especially against Luke Humphries, a main rival for a top four spot.

“The best man on the night will win and hopefully that can be me!”

Humphries, meanwhile, will be eager to halt a difficult run of results, having lost his last four matches since Night Seven. Despite that, the world number two has maintained a tournament average of just over 100, the second-highest in this year’s competition, underlining the fine margins that have cost him results.

Elsewhere, Michael van Gerwen will also be in action in front of his home fans, taking on league leader Jonny Clayton in another standout tie. The pair met in last week’s final in Brighton, where Clayton produced a stunning comeback from 5-2 down to deny Van Gerwen a second nightly victory.

Clayton currently tops the table following nightly wins in Glasgow, Nottingham and Brighton, and is aiming to secure qualification for Finals Night for the fourth time in as many appearances.

“It’s great to be top, but I just want to be in the top four,” said Clayton.

“If I’m first, second, third or fourth, I really don’t care, I just want to be at the O2 on Night 17.

“I wouldn’t say it’s done for the Play-Offs, but I think if I can pick a few more points up, two points maybe, then maybe I can say it’s done.

“Obviously I have a good buffer between myself and fifth, so fingers crossed I will be there.”

The evening’s opening match will see Luke Littler take on Gerwyn Price, with both players looking to bounce back after early exits in Brighton. Littler endured a rare off-night last week, recording the lowest televised average of his career in defeat, while Price was beaten by a resurgent Josh Rock.

Despite that setback, Littler remains well placed in the standings, sitting nine points clear of fifth, while Price occupies third following nightly victories in Antwerp and Manchester.

The remaining quarter-final sees Stephen Bunting face Rock for a place in the semi-finals. Bunting’s win over Littler in Brighton lifted him above Humphries into sixth position, while Rock has found form in recent weeks, claiming three consecutive quarter-final victories.

With crucial ranking points on offer—five for the winner, three for the runner-up and two for each semi-finalist—the stakes continue to rise as the Premier League edges closer to Finals Night at London’s O2 Arena on May 28.
