James Wade became the first seed to be sent home from the 2025 Paddy Power World Darts Championship.

The Machine lost in straight sets to European Championship runner up Jermaine Wattimena to crash out in round two for the third straight year.

The other seed in action, 2021 World Champion Gerwyn Price, survived his round two clash, coming through 3-0 against Ireland’s Keane Barry.

The first double session day of the 2025 World Darts Championship also saw both Cameron Menzies and Alan Soutar knocked out on a disappointing day for Scotland, while both Connor Scutt and Luke Woodhouse impressed in their round one ties.

Wattimena punishes wasteful Wade but Price powers through

After winning his round one game last night against Stefan Bellmont, Machine Gun came into the contest telling the world that he would beat Wade. Even he though could not have imagined just how comfortable it would be.

Wade won the opening leg, but Wattimena, who beat him at the Euros en route, took nine of the next 10 legs to secure his spot in the last 32. The Machine finished just 2/16 on the doubles, blowing chances to win the majority of the legs, as the Dutchman hit an average of just under a ton. He hit a 126 checkout to go within one, before wrapping his victory up on double eight.

There were no such problems for Price in his round two match with Barry. The first set came down to doubling, in which the Irishman missed all four attempts at the outer ring. The Welshman punished his opponent, winning it in three straight legs and wrapping it up with a lovely 112 outshot.

The missed darts at double continued for Dynamite throughout the match, as he ended up just 2/24 on the checkouts. This allowed Price to take the both the second and third sets 3-1, finishing with a 56 outshot on tops to move into round three once again.

Two Scots sent home as Menzies and Soutar lose

Cameron Menzies missed 27 darts at a double as he lost 3-1 to America’s Leonard Gates.

The Soulger won two of the first three sets to nil which featured a 138 and 120 in set one, as Cammy struggled to find the outer ring despite winning set two. The fourth set went to a decider, where Gates, after missing four match darts previously, found an astonishing 122 outshot to end the contest. He takes on Nathan Aspinall on Wednesday night in the next round.

Alan Soutar had never failed to progress to the fourth round of the World Darts Championship before today, but his record came to an end against German Super League winner Kai Gotthardt.

Soutar won the first set which featured one of the German’s darts completely snapping. However, the new dart seemed to do the trick, as he won five of the next six legs to go 2-1 up. The fourth set went to a decider, and after the Scot missed double 12 for a level game, Gotthardt eventually found double two to win on debut, sending the German contingent at Alexandra Palace wild. He plays Stephen Bunting in the second round on Friday afternoon.

What else happened?

The performance of the day arguably came from Connor Scutt in round one. He hit an average of 101.92 featuring four 180s and a highest checkout of 117, as he dropped just one leg in his whitewash defeat of New Zealand’s Ben Robb.

It all but secures The Sniper’s place in the top 64 at the end of the year, which means he keeps the money he earned on the Pro Tour in 2024 and puts him in great shape to try and qualify for next year’s World Matchplay. Scutt will play Damon Heta in round two on Saturday night.

Luke Woodhouse also produced an assured performance to whitewash Lourence Ilagan 3-0. The Filipino never really got going as he made it nine first round exits at the Worlds in his nine appearances, as Woody hit four 180s to set up a game with World Grand Prix champion Mike de Decker tomorrow afternoon.

Niels Zonneveld exited at the first round of the Paddy Power World Darts Championship for a third time in four appearances. He lost to Wales’ Robert Owen 3-1, where Stat Attack found an excellent 121 checkout to seal victory in the deciding leg of the fourth set. Owen plays former semi finalist Gabriel Clemens on Thursday afternoon next.

Finally, Wesley Plaisier almost became the third Pro Tour player to fall to an international qualifier today at Alexandra Palace, but fought back to beat Japan’s Ryusei Azemoto 3-2. Azemoto was up 2-1 but never got a match dart, as the Dutchman won five of the next six legs to set up a round two clash against Peter Wright tomorrow night.
