Gibraltar Darts Trophy day one round up
Gibraltar Darts Trophy day one round up.
Rob Cross survived a scare to beat Nordic & Baltic qualifier Patrik Kovacs 6-4 on day one of the second and final Euro Tour event of the year.
Voltage defeated Patrik Kovacs to set up a mouth-watering round two clash with Michael van Gerwen.
Elsewhere, John Henderson and Keane Barry were knocked out, while Luke Humphries, Mervyn King, Ryan Searle and Simon Whitlock all joined the last 32 line up.
Cross leads list of players into round two
Rob Cross who took to the stage in the afternoon session came from 4-3 behind to win the last three legs to wrap up the victory. The key leg was leg 9 when Kovacs missed four darts at a double to move one away. Rob Cross punished and the rest as they say is history.
The comeback of round one came from Heavy Metal. Ryan Searle came up against an inspired Martin Schindler in the early stages and was 5-2 up with a 101 average. Ryan Searle wasn’t playing bad at the time, but had to fine another gear to reel off four straight legs to book his place into the next round. Schindler will be disappointed not to get over the line after missing five match darts but a lot of positives for the young German.
Kim Huybrechts showed tonight he’s total forgot about Belgium’s World Cup performance, by putting in the performance of the night averaging 105.08 in a 6-2 over Boris Koltsov.
The Wizard was in inspired form as he demolished Wayne Jones 6-2 to set an interesting tie with Michael Smith.
The highly anticipated final game of round saw the German giant defeat the hotly tipped Luke Humphries 6-4 in a game that had nine 180’s. Clemens will meet Devon Petersen in round two.
Gibraltarian hopes dashed on day one
This is the second Gibraltar Darts Trophy but this time taking place at the Europa Sports Park. Despite a new venue the crowd could not help the home nation qualifiers move into round two.
Dyson Parody came closest to getting a win for Gibraltar however, he will be disappointed with his performance. Dyson lost to Kenny Neyens who broke the record for the lowest average win on a Euro Tour event by averaging 71.21. World Cup participate Justin Hewitt was also unable to get past his opponent as he fell 6-1 against Callan Rydz.
Elsewhere, Mervin King whitewashed Craig Galliano, while Justin Broton could only get one leg on the board as he lost 6-1 to the impressive Adam Smith-Neale.
Hempel continues to impress
Florian Hempel produced an outstanding performance to get the better of Stephen Bunting in a last leg decider. The German hit three ton-plus finishes including a 141, and finished the game with an 11 dart leg to set up a tie against the World Champion Gerwyn Price.
Another quality game saw Krcmar defeat World Cup Winner John Henderson 6-2. After the first four legs we were all level, then the Croat stepped on the gas with some power scoring to secure his first ever win on the Euro Tour. Ritchie Edhouse also found a way to victory this time it was 6-4 in a topsy-turvy affair against Steve Beaton.
Evetts survived match darts to beat Ryan Murray
Super Ted had to come back from 5-3 to beat Ryan Murray, Evetts found himself in real danger of a first round exit with Ryan Murray having five match darts to win this one. After Murray had scuppered his chances, it was a 108 checkout for Ted Evetts to set up a second round tie against the out of sorts Dirk van Duijvenbode.
Andreas Harrysson produced the shock of the afternoon session with a 6-3 win against the highly talented Keane Barry. Also in the afternoon session we saw Joe Murnan come through a last leg decider and Adam Hunt whitewash Geert Nentjes 6-0.
