Quarter final day at the Paddy Power World Darts Championship is always a day that darting fans have in the diary.

After a break for New Year’s Eve, we begin 2025 with four matches, each a best of nine sets. By the end of New Year’s Day, we will have halved the field and be one step closer to crowing the winner of the Sid Waddell Trophy.

It’s one of the best darting days of the year, and this time around, it features eight players who have all reached this stage of the competition before.

Here’s what to look forward to on quarter final day at the Paddy Power World Darts Championship.

We start the darting year of 2025 with what could be an absolute classic, as Chris Dobey takes on Gerwyn Price.

Dobey saw off Alexander Merkx in round two and Josh Rock in round three, before getting over the line in a seven set thriller against Kevin Doets on Monday.

Price has got better as he’s progressed in this tournament. He defeated Keane Barry in round two, followed by getting over the line in a deciding leg shootout against Joe Cullen in round three. He then beat fellow Welshman Jonny Clayton, who’s he won the World Cup with twice, in round four to reach the last eight for the third time in four years.

The last time The Iceman participated in a World Darts Championship quarter final, he played part of the match with ear defenders on, as he lost to Gabriel Clemens. He’s looking to reach the semi finals for the first time since he won this event in 2021. Hollywood though, is looking to finally reach the last four at this event for the first time, after losing out at this stage two years in a row.

Both have scored very well this tournament, but their doubles will need to improve. The pair haven’t met since in 2024, but Price has won 15 of the previous 16 meetings between the two, including in their two TV ranking matches. Can he continue this great record, or will Dobey deliver on the biggest stage of them all?

The winner will take on either Michael van Gerwen or Callan Rydz, who meet in the second quarter final.

Van Gerwen has cruised through for much of the tournament, beating James Hurrell in round two and Brendan Dolan in the last 32. He then produced an average of 102 to defeat Jeffrey De Graaf 4-2 in round four, reaching the quarter finals for the 11th time in his career.

Rydz though has been the player of the World Darts Championship so far. He defeated Romeo Grbavac with a 107 average, Martin Schindler in round two, and then hit a 105 average against UK Open champion Dimitri Van den Bergh, reaching the last 16 without dropping a set.

On Monday, he was taken to seven sets by Robert Owen, but still hit 12 maximums en route to his second appearance in the last eight at Alexandra Palace.

MvG leads their head to head record 3-2, including winning both their only meeting in 2024 and their only previous meeting on TV at the 2023 Players Championship Finals. This though is arguably the best The Riot has ever played, so can he continue his excellent form? Or will Van Gerwen make the last four at Ally Pally for the seventh time in the last 10 years?

Top half in evening session, featuring Littler v Aspinall

The evening session of darts sees the top half of the draw take to the stage, starting with Peter Wright v Stephen Bunting.

Wright started slowly, averaging under 90 but still beating Wesley Plaisier in round two. However, he averaged 97 to beat Jermaine Wattimena next, before hitting a 100.93 average to send the world number one and defending champion Luke Humphries home.

Eighth seed Bunting has enjoyed an excellent run so far, defeating Kai Gotthardt in round two and Madars Razma in round three, before whitewashing Luke Woodhouse in the last 16.

Snakebite’s last appearance in an Ally Pally quarter final was in 2022, when he won his second Sid Wadell Trophy. This is the second time in three years The Bullet has reached this stage, and is looking for his first semi final appearance since 2021.

The pair have met a staggering 30 times down the years, with Wright leading the overall head to head 18-12. However, in both TV games in 2024, Bunting has come out on top, including at The Masters, where he beat Snakebite in the quarter finals, going on to win the tournament. Is that an omen for the man from St Helens? Or will Wright continue to roll back the years and move one step closer to his third World Darts Championship?

The winner of this game will take on the winner of the last quarter final, as tournament favourite Luke Littler takes on Nathan Aspinall.

The Nuke, a beaten finalist on debut last year, has not had things his own way this time around. After producing the highest ever set in World Darts Championship history en route to beating Ryan Meikle in round two, he’s faced two tough tests, against Ian White in the third round, followed by a seven set thriller against Ryan Joyce in round four.

By contrast, it’s been comfortable for The Asp, who defeated Leonard Gates in round two, and did not drop a set in wins over Andrew Gilding and Ricardo Pietreczko in rounds three and four. This is the first time Aspinall is in the World Darts Championship quarter finals since he made the semi finals in both 2019 and 2020.

The pair met seven times in 2024, with Littler winning six of them, including in the quarter final of the Bahrain Darts Masters where he hit a nine darter in the first leg of the match. Will he continue that impressive record against his stablemate? Or can The Asp produce victory in their first ever ranked TV game?
