Price cruises to next round

Gerwyn Price starts off his campaign with a straight sets win against the German Martin Schindler.

The tournament favourite was dominant in the opening set before squandering six darts for a 3-0 win. Schindler recovered to hold, but Price made amends by nailing a 14 darter to take the lead.

Schindler then missed 3 darts in the next set to take the lead, after some dodgy doubling from the Iceman. A brilliant 101 from Price slammed the door on a Schindler hold, and then a 60 out sealed the deal for the win.

Aspinall outclasses Smith

Michael Smith squeezes past Aspinall in a thriller.

The Asp started brilliantly with a 116 out to break in the opening leg after Smith missed the bull. Smith’s finishing was woeful, missing D10 by a good distance multiple times. The Asp punished by holding twice to claim the first set.

Nathan produced a 12 darter to break in the next set which made the tie all but over. A 95 out gave Smith some hope, then a 101 sent us to a decider. Three clear darts at D8 were missed for the set, and Smith punished him on D10. Three clear legs in the final set allows Aspinall to cruise past a poor doubling performance from Smith.

Gurney sees off Cross

The 2017 World Grand Prix champion defeated the number 8 seed in a deciding set.

The Northern Irishman won the opening set after Cross took nine darts to get started in the fifth leg. Voltage then stepped it up in the second set where he barely missed D18. However, Superchin whitewashed Rob in the final set despite some very nervy match darts.

This is the fourth defeat in the first round for Rob Cross in only six attempts.

Noppert and Cullen victorious

There is a possibility that Cullen and Noppert could be competing for a Premier League spot between them. They have both won a major this year and are in the second round here in Leicester.

Noppert had the easier experience, brushing Clemens 2-0. The highlight of the match was the second leg where Danny took 13 darts to get started, but stole the leg off The German Giant with a 101 out.

Cullen pegged back to 1-1 after an easy opening set, before breaking in the penultimate leg of the match to see off the Australian in a repeat of their matchplay clash. More TV woes for Heta though…

Madars Razma pinched the match after a missed D18 from Ryan Searle.

Ross Smith also cam from behind to beat Andrew Gilding, who averaged 93 in the first set before falling off a cliff.
