The Teenage dream carries on, as Luke Littler claims the World Series Finals title ahead of Michael Smith
After defeating World Cup Winner Michael Smith eleven legs to four, the Warrington Wonderkid Luke Littler adds the coveted World Series Finals trophy to his collection.
The Nuke, who missed an incredible 22 chances to double, yet recorded a 102.21 average, about 10 points more than his rival, the Bully Boy, in yet another convincing win.
Only twice in the 15 legs—in Leg 1 and Leg 3—did Smith take the lead; after it was all one-way traffic with Littler claiming seven successive legs after the pair were level at 3-3.
Leg 14’s 170 checkout by Michael Smith would be the highest checkout among the two, but Littler’s 22 checkout in the next leg would seal the deal and it would be a comprehensive victory.
The Nuke’s Route to the Final
On day three of the World Series Finals, he faced Chris Dobey in the quarterfinals, and that was his closest matchup, although it was still rather easy.
Hollywood’s 100.91 average was still unable to match Littler’s performance, despite his seven legs. Between the two, they pinned 19 maximums (10 for Littler and 9 for Dobey).
After bypassing the 2023 Masters Champion, Michael Van Gerwen, the six-time Champion, squared up against Luke Littler.
The Green Machine recorded his fourth and last leg of the match by leg six. The teenage phenom came alive and won an incredible nine legs on the spin, establishing his greatest average of the tournament at 107.95, even though he was behind by two at this point.
The fact that Littler only offered the Dutchman five chances at double, highlights the excellence of his performance.
Smith second best at the World Series Final
The quarterfinal matchup between Rob Cross and Michael Smith was captivating. It would go the distance and ultimately was determined by a last leg shootout.
Wastefulness on the outer ring, gave Cross ampul opportunities even though Smith dominated the treble 20 (pinning a total of 12 180s).
The two would both record a four-ton plus checkout, with Smith pinning the highest with an incredible 128 outshot.
It would be a matchup with Snakebite in the semifinals, who had advanced past Daryl Gurney in the previous round.
Smith had trouble in the outside ring in the previous round, but in this match these woes seem to disappear, the former world champion pinned all seven of his doubles efforts to grab a 7-2 lead.
In fact, it was more like roles reversed, with Smith missing only four tries at the outer ring while the current German Darts Champion would miss fifteen.
Overall, Michael Smith put on a magnificent performance, helped along the way by a few high checkouts, notably an exceptional 152 in leg seven.
Elsewhere on Day Three
Luke Humphries, the World Champion and current number one, faced Michael Van Gerwen in the second match of the evening, which ended in a last leg shootout. On home turf, though, the Dutchman would triumph and checkout a inch perfect 170.
It was a long cry from the performance that neither of them had anticipated; between them, 47 darts were missed at double, and their average was little over 94.
As was already noted, Daryl Gurney and Peter Wright faced off, and both had trouble finishing and scoring. With an average of 89.10, Daryl Gurney was the only average of the day that fell below the 90. Against Gurney, Snakebite jumped out to a 5-1 lead until Gurney responded with two legs.
Only one more leg would be taken by the Irishman in the match before the Scot was emerged as the 10-4 winner.
There were two outstanding moments throughout the contest, starting with Wright’s 121 checkout. Before Superchin’s mesmerizing 158 outshot stole the show.
