After Michael van Gerwen won in Berlin last week, we’re back for night three of the 2024 BetMGM Premier League Darts.

This week marks the first visit of the year to Scotland, with the event taking place at The OVO Hydro in Glasgow. Glasgow has held a Premier League night since 2008 (bar the two COVID years of 2020 and 2021), with the Hydro being the venue of choice since 2014.

Last year, Michael Smith beat Dimitri Van den Bergh for his first nightly win of the season. Having won the opening night in Cardiff this time around, will The Bully Boy two of the first three? Or will it be someone else’s turn to lift the trophy?

Here’s what is in store on night three of the 2024 BetMGM Premier League Darts.

Four world champions in first two quarter finals

The first quarter final of the night sees Smith go up against Rob Cross. The Bully Boy lost 6-5 to eventual champion van Gerwen in the semi finals last week, while Voltage lost to Luke Littler 6-5 in the quarter finals.

Both disappointed in this week’s Pro Tour events, with neither making into the last 32 of any event. The two have not played against each other since the last Euro Tour of 2023 in October, when the 2018 World Champion Cross beat the 2023 World Champion Smith 6-5.

Voltage also has the overall edge over Bully Boy in head to head records, leading 18-6. This includes a last 32 game at the 2018 World Championship, where Cross survived multiple match darts against Smith before winning 4-3 and eventually going on to lift the Sid Waddell Trophy. Cross also defeated Smith in the 2019 World Matchplay Final, winning 18-13.

Will Voltage continue his good record? Or will The Bully Boy extend his lead at the top of the Premier League Darts table?

The second quarter final sees last week’s winner van Gerwen take on Peter Wright. Snakebite showed signs of improvement from his poor start to the year seven days ago, but still lost 6-4 to Luke Humphries in the quarter finals.

MvG withdrew from the Pro Tour events in Wigan. Wright went out in round one on Monday, but lost 7-5 in the semi finals on Tuesday to eventual winner Gary Anderson.

The Green Machine has had Snakebite’s number in the Premier League, particularly since the new format started in 2022. In fact, the Dutchman has lost just one of the eight games they have played since then, although that was the last game in Leeds. The Scot famously also missed six match darts for the title in 2017 against MvG.

Wright though will have his home crowd supporting him in the Hydro, so can they help him get his first two points of the campaign? Or will Mighty Mike back up his win in Berlin with glory in Glasgow?

Three of world’s top four in last two quarter finals

Third on in Glasgow will be Nathan Aspinall and Luke Humphries. The Asp went 3-0 up against van Gerwen in his quarter final, but lost out 6-4. Cool Hand won against Wright, but lost in the last four 6-5 to Luke Littler in another epic contest.

Aspinall made both the top 16 and top 32 in the first two Pro Tour events, while Humphries could only get past the top 64 once, carrying on a difficult start to the year for the new World Champion which has seen him win four of his 10 games since lifting the Sid Waddell Trophy at Alexandra Palace.

The two have only played each other seven times, with The Asp leading Cool Hand 4-3 overall. He also has an undefeated record against him on TV, winning both of their meetings at the 2022 World Matchplay and 2022 Grand Slam.

Will that continue here? Or will Humphries get his first victory over Aspinall in front of the big cameras?

The final last eight tie sees Gerwyn Price face Luke Littler. Price lost to Michael Smith 6-5 in the quarter finals last week, while Littler missed two darts for his first ever Premier League Darts nightly win, eventually losing 6-5 to van Gerwen.

The Iceman did not live up to his nickname in Wigan this week, withdrawing from the Pro Tours on Monday claiming that the venue was too cold and describing it as “less than amateur conditions.” There were no such issues for The Nuke, winning the first event before losing out in the last 64 on Tuesday.

The two have already played each other twice this year, with Littler winning 7-3 in the Bahrain Darts Masters semi final en route to his first senior PDC title, and 7-4 in the Dutch Darts Masters semi final a week later.

Will it be third time lucky for Price to get victory over the 17-year-old? Or will The Nuke’s undefeated record against The Iceman remain?
