Van Gerwen goes back to back in 2024 Premier League Darts
Michael van Gerwen became the first player to win back to back nights in the 2024 BetMGM Premier League Darts.
On a night which featured two missed double 12s for a nine darter, MvG followed up his win in Berlin with another victory in Glasgow, beating Luke Humphries 6-5.
It means for the first time this year, The Green Machine, who won this event last year for a seventh time, is now top of the table and already on course for another appearance at Finals Night in May at The O2.
Mighty Mike lives up to his nickname
World Champion Humphries broke in the opening leg of a pulsating final, but the three time World Champion van Gerwen hit 98 on D19 and tops to level. Both then held to keep the game level at 2-2. Cool Hand broke again, this time in 16 darts, to take the lead at 3-2 before holding to go within two.
A huge moment came in the seventh leg, when MvG missed 10 darts to close the gap, while Humphries missed four to go within one of the match in scenes akin to his amazing fourth round match against Joe Cullen at the World Championship this year. In the end, it was van Gerwen who found double one to go 4-3 behind.
Humphries then missed a bullseye shot in the next leg, allowing The Green Machine to find double 12 to equalise. Both then held, setting up a deciding leg for the tournament. In the end, MvG found a 14 darter, hitting tops to take the win and go top of the pile.
Both had won two previous matches in the evening to make the final. Van Gerwen’s evening started with a 6-2 win against Peter Wright, in a game that saw Snakebite miss 17 of 19 darts at a double. MvG finished off the game with an excellent 136 checkout to move into the semis.
MvG then moved into the final with a 6-4 victory over Rob Cross. It was a slow burner of a match, but the Dutchman found the decisive break in the fifth leg. He then held three more times, ending the game with an 88 outshot on the bull.
Humphries’ night started by being 3-1 down to Nathan Aspinall, who also missed D12 for a nine darter. Cool Hand though averaged 105.53, finishing the match off with a 105 checkout and winning five legs on the spin to take a 6-3 win.
Humphries then played against last year’s runner up in Gerwyn Price. Cool Hand went 4-2 ahead, before Price broke back to get the game back on throw. However, back to back 13 darters secured the World Champion his first ever Premier League Darts nightly final appearance.
What else happened?
While they did not make the final, Rob Cross and Gerwyn Price continued to assert themselves in the early race for the top four.
Cross saw off Michael Smith in the first quarter final 6-4. It was a back and forth game between the pair, but the deciding moment saw some serious quality from Voltage, pinging 144 on T18, T18 and D18 to bag another two points.
Price and Luke Littler shared multiple breaks in the last quarter final, but The Iceman had the advantage of throw in the final leg. The Welshman also missed D12 for a nine dart leg, but found it in the deciding leg to come through 6-5. It marks Littler’s first loss in the Premier League quarter final stage.
