Michael van Gerwen claims the Premier League is the  “same all the time.” and big matches have lost their shine.

His performance has dipped a bit lately, most notably during the Berlin tournament last week when Welsh star Johnny Clayton defeated three-time world champion 6-5.

Even though he wasn’t at his best in Germany, van Gerwen still holds a five-point lead at the top of the table. However, he acknowledged that he was bored with the way the competition is being run when he lost focus last time.

While discussing his loss with Clayton,”I wasn’t 100% there. I wasn’t there with my mind. Of course that is wrong, that is my fault, but also it doesn’t really help that I am already a few points clear in the table.”

After MvG spoke to Viaplay in Dutch on Thursday, the translation of his interview was feed to the UK media, so at the Euro Tour this weekend we got clarification from van Gerwen on these comments.

“Sometimes it is boring because it is the same all the time. I remember a few years ago when we had the Premier League with the top games you had them twice and people were looking forward to certain games.

“Now you have got certain games week after week which makes it less interesting but that is not for me to judge. I love to play on stage and of course I could have done better, of course it was my mistake.” The Dutchman went on to add that the only way to fix his ‘boredom’ was to continue to win games.
